Rock & Rye Old Fashioned

This old fashioned offers a complex and subtly spiced twist on the classic cocktail. The spicy warmth of High Road Rye melds with a homemade spiced rock candy syrup that lends a touch of sweetness and a layer of autumnal flavor.

Ingredients

2 oz. Hard Truth High Road Rye
½ oz.  Spiced rock candy syrup*
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes Orange angostura bitters
Orange twist, to garnish

*See below build directions for syrup recipe.

Directions

1. In a mixing beaker, combine High Road Rye, spiced rock candy syrup*, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters.
2. Fill the beaker with ice, and stir until well-chilled.
3. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
4. Express the oils from an orange peel by twisting it over the drink, then place twist in the glass to garnish, and serve.
*To make spiced rock candy syrup, combine 3 c. sugar, 1 c. water, 1 oz. of cloves, 6 cinnamon sticks, and the zest of three oranges in a saucepan. Heat on low, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes, then add another cup of water, and stir well. Remove from heat and let cool, then strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove solids. Pour strained syrup into a sealable container. For extra spice, add cinnamon sticks to the container. Store any unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
