Mizunara Finished Sweet Mash Rye

Mizunara Oak – rarer than European or American oak and significantly more expensive – is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. This unique cask finish mellows the whiskey, creating a harmonious balance of spicy and sweet notes. The result is a smooth, approachable expression, full of subtle complexity. Released in a true small batch of only 21 barrels.

A Note from Master Distiller Bryan Smith:

The barrels we use to age our whiskey are not just containers, but an actual ingredient. When thinking about our Barrel Finish Reserve series, and the ways we can build flavor by aging with oak, I naturally gravitated back to my fascination with Japanese cuisine. Utilizing a Japanese sourced oak like Mizunara was a no brainer for Hard Truth. It’s an amazing oak species that lends soft, subtle notes of almond shortbread to the nose and lingering sandalwood incense to the finish. Our Sweet Mash Rye is already one of my favorites and a whiskey I’m somewhat sentimental about. The addition of Mizunara Oak to Sweet Mash Rye takes it to an entirely new level.
